“Look around! Can you form a kind of rudimentary lathe?”

So we’ve finally expanded our site to encompass all the things we love; family, music, art, books, movies, musing on life in general.  And how do I christen it?  By quoting the movie ‘Galaxy Quest’.  Let this serve you as fair warning.  My taste in movies is predictably unpredictable.  Sure I love “A Room With a View”, “Burnt By the Sun”, ” the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, many intellectual, foreign, and indie films, along with various other high-minded cinematic endeavours…  But I also love “Dumb and Dumber”, “UHF”, “Blades of Glory”, “Spinal Tap”, and many, many other belly-laugh inducing, bizarro and brain-candy movies.

And oh, how I love Galaxy Quest.  A quick synopsis for those who haven’t seen or heard of it.  It makes fun of Trekkies, but in a way that those of us who border on or inhabit Trekkie territory don’t mind.   Here is the description from IMDb:

Eighteen years after their sci-fi adventure show “Galaxy Quest” was canceled, actors Jason Nesmith, Gwen DeMarco, Alexander Dane, Tommy Webber, and Fred Kwan are making appearances at sci-fi conventions and store openings in costume and character. They’re wallowing in despair and at each other’s throats until aliens known as Thermians arrive and, having mistaken the show for fact and consequently modeling their entire culture around it, take them into space to save them from the genocidal General Sarris and his armada. If you’re looking for a little something-something to brighten your weekend -and maybe your brain has been a bit too taxed this week- watch Galaxy Quest.  Put on the flannel jammies, pop a big bowl of popcorn and pour yourself a ginger ale -homemade if you can swing it!-, put your feet up and laugh your tail off.  It beat exercising your tail off…
